Broad Street Change

I decided to concentrate on a particular corner on Broad Street. I thought I would be able to get a better understanding the surrounding areas if I were to find signs or signals that can tell me a particular detail about this street corner. The corner I chose was Tasker Street. The pictures I added are backwards. The first two photographs are screen shots I pulled from GoogleMaps, for the reader to be able to see what differences have been made to this corner on Broad Street.

The most outstanding building of this corner I thought was the Philadelphia Gas Works. This retro sign made me think that it has been here for a long time, perhaps when they were first established. The fading USA Today newsstand sticks out to me as well, its dilapidation makes be believe it is no longer in service.

Next to the PGW building is an AnyLabTestNow! business. This leads me to believe that there are people around this area that don't have health insurance, and can't afford tests to be done at a hospital. From the advertisements it seems that they are very common tests like STD/HIV tests, or paternity tests. In the GoogleMaps version of this building there is a LabCorp, which is basically the same thing. The place has been rebranded, but not much has changed.
Alongside the newsstand is a broken pay phone with a website on the side that says foundationmag.com ----> the magazine/website is no longer in service, so I'm not really sure what it could be for. In the GoogleMaps screenshot, the phone is still intact. A sticker for a Mumia rally that took place in November of, I'm assuming, 2010. I googled the event and it took place on Tues, November 9th. Mumia Abu-Jamal is an influential person of the whole Philadelphia area.

I just really liked this Peco meter that was still running, even though the USA Today newsstand seemed to have been totally shut down. I will have to go there sometime during the day to see if it is still in operation.
